Nonna on the Facade

A girl in a red Japanese-inspired dress painted on a house plot

The Swedish artist MariaManuela Vintilescu, known as Nipponpop, has created two artworks for Subtopia’s outdoor gallery. This one is on the base of a facade. The other one is located on an electrical cabinet in a passage by Subtopia’s main building. The artist is inspired by pop art, Japan, and Asia. The Japanese influences come primarily from Nipponpop’s great aunt Sigrid who painted a lot and spent the first half of the 20th century in Japan. She brought the art and the culture back home to her family.

The artist’s work carries a duality between the modern and the traditional. The figure, Nonna, is a celebration of MariaManuela’s role as a grandmother. Nipponpop is the mother-in-law of another artist who is also in the art walk, namely street and graffiti artist Ziggy, who has also created two pieces for the outdoor gallery.
